The 2010 season is finally under way. The main branch of the men's league is done with week #1. We had 15 matches completed out of 16 scheduled. Only one match was a forfeit. Thank you all for doing a great job setting up matches and completing them on time. You can check the scores and standings on our web site http://www.rochestertennisleague.com/
This week our other two divisions are starting as well. The women's league starts session I with 11 players, and men's challenger league with 6. So we have 57 active participants this season and 2 subs.
I just wanted to refresh our rules about subbing. If someone is injured or away for a week they have to let me know so I can find a sub for them. Sub comes in only as a benefit to the other player who is available , this way they would still get to play that week. Points won by a sub don't count, the match is still recorded as a forfeit 0-6,0-6 in favor of the available player. So be considerate to your opponent and request a sub when you know you won't be available for a week. We only have 2 subs so getting one won't always be possible.
The group phase
Some of you might wonder why we don't split to different levels right a away so you only play people at your level from the get go. Since beginning of the league I always taught that every season we should all get a fresh start and earn your level by playing matches, not by your last year's standings or in case of new players by what level you claim to be. This is also an opportunity to play against top rated players which wouldn't happen if you just stay in your level all summer long. I know for some advanced players it might get kind of tough to play beginners but the group phase is only for first 4 matches. After that, for the second part of the session I and entire session II everyone will be playing opponents close to their level.
Have a great week and have fun out there.
