Session I starts today

Hello everybody

The fifth season of the Rochester Tennis League league starts today. We have a record attendance this year with 40 players in men's league, 11 in women's and so far 5 players in men's challenger division. We are starting a week earlier than last year thanks to some great spring weather. Hopefully it will stay nice. First round matches need to be reported by next Monday night May 3rd. All matches not done on time will be disqualified. It looks like the weather will be good for the first half of the week. The winners usually report the scores to me, unless players decide otherwise.

As you noticed on the schedule, during the group phase one person in each group will be off every week. This would be a good opportunity for some of you to play matches ahead of time if you plan to be out of town some other week.

I always stress the importance of getting in touch with your opponents early in the week, and having good and timely communication. This will be crucial for completing your matches. Summer time is busy for everyone , we all have different schedules, weather can be an issue so e mailing your opponent on Thursday or Friday probably will not work as good. Sometimes it takes a few e mails to arrange the match, so more time you have to plan better.

Please let me know if you are having trouble reaching your opponent or if they are not responding to your e mails. I try to stay on the top of this early on , so we can fix these issues and find out what the problem is.

Challenger division
So far we have 5 players registered for the challenger league and 2 are thinking about it. This group will have players of all levels and play parallel with our main draw. I plan to start this group next Monday May 3rd, hopefully we will get couple of more players by the end of week. Players in this division will be filling any openings we might have at the end of session I. Looking back we usually have 5-7 open spots in between sessions so chances are good that there will be enough openings for everybody.

Subs
I have two players on my subs list this year, so if you can't play one your matches let me know and I can arrange a sub so your opponent still gets to play that week. Points won by subs won't count toward your total.

Womens league
The women's division starts to play next Monday May 3rd, so far the group has 11 players, I was hoping to get one more this week to make it an even number.

Practice matches/hitting partners
One of our challengers is looking to play more often than once a week so if you are looking for a practice match e mail Josh at joshua_wally@yahoo.com he is 3.0 level.

Session I format refresher

First 5 weeks you play everyone in your group once. I tried to divide groups so they are evenly matched We should have players of all levels in each group. Last 3 weeks of the session are placement/playoff rounds. Eight group winners play each other for places 1-8, second places play each other for places 9-16th and so on. At the end of session I, everyone will complete 7 matches and be ranked from 1st to 40th place. Top 10 players will qualify to play division I, 11th-20th place will play division II, 21st-30th place division III, 31st-40th place division IV. So your session I ranking will determine what level you play in session II.

Message board

I created a new page on this blog called message board. You can see a link for it below this paragraph or on the upper right corner of this blog. Just like the forum on our main site, this page is created to help players find a hitting partner when they are looking for a practice match. Since I have a new blog post almost every week you can take a look at the message board frequently , post your availability, skill level, contact info or see if anyone else is looking for a practice partner. Feel free to use it for other comments regarding the league as well. Check it out at the link below

So long for now, have fun out there this week.
