After moving the start date earlier and earlier each season, we finally got punished by some terrible tennis weather. I think I had 4 layers of clothing for my match , and it was probably first time I played that close to the freezing mark.
We had 21 matches completed on time out of 24 scheduled for week #1, which is very impressive considering the weather. It's a great sign that we got a very dedicated group once again. Thank you all for all the extra effort you had to do to set up your matches past week.
Hopefully we will have better conditions in coming weeks.
Round 1 scores and standings are posted on our web site http://www.rochestertennisleague.com/
Wild card division
Since we reached 56 players on April 22nd , I have been placing new players on a waiting list. Just like last year, once we get enough people waiting we will start them up in a wild card division. This way they can play each other until we get an opening in the main draw. If we don't get any openings during the current session ,people from the wild card division will be added to the league for session II. Last year we had 8 people in the wild card group and they played entire first session. All of them were added to the main league in session II. So if you know someone who is interested you can direct them to the web site and they can still register. So far we have 3 people waiting.
Women's division
Women's division started their session I this week. We ended up with 15 players divided in two groups. Their session will be 8 weeks long. The schedule is ready at http://www.womenstennisleague.moonfruit.com/
USTA summer leagues
Bob Hubert gathered some valuable information about USTA team leagues for those of you interested in other opportunities to play tennis this summer. So here it is:
To play in a USTA league, you need to become a USTA member and find a team. In Rochester, both the Rochester Tennis Connection (www.rochestertennis.com) (email Jan or Tim Butorac rochtennis@yahoo.com) and the Rochester Athletic Club (http://rochesterathleticclub.com/) (contact person is Karl Monson) can easily help you get started and put you on a team. A one-year membership into the USTA is $42. In addition, league fees run around $15. Players may play their USTA matches with no guest fees. USTA court fees apply at the same rate as members, which is approximately $10/match. That will be the same for any team you play on. Some fees and requirements differ by facility. Here is a partial list:
Rochester Athletic Club
No limit to the number of non-members allowed to play on each USTA team (this is a new policy to invite non-members to play);
Non-members may participate in scheduled practices at the RAC with their team. Guest fees for that time will be waived;
Non-members will pay the same court fees as members. Outdoor courts are free. Indoor courts are $15/hour divided among players sharing the court;
Team practice with a pro is billed at the rate of $62/hour. Those costs can be shared with all people practicing. In addition there is a $3 per person non-member fee if a pro is used.

Rochester Tennis Connection
No limit to the number of public players on a team since their facility is open to the public;
Team practice without a pro at the outdoor site (Kutzky Park) would be billed at the regular guest fee of $9;
Team practice with a pro is billed at the rate of $60/hour. Those costs can be shared with all people practicing;
In the summer, indoor guest fees are waived and court time ($24/hr) is divided among players sharing the court.
USTA matches are once per week and consist of two singles matches and three doubles matches. Each player plays only one match so a total of eight teammates play each week. Some teams practice while others do not. Some hire pros while others do not. Please contact each facility to get current rates, pricing, and team practices as these sometimes change. Right now is the time to get on a USTA men's or women's team. If you do not know a team captain, contact either the RTC or RAC and ask them to put you on a team. Teams are forming now to start play in a few weeks.
