Hello everyone,
Season six of the Rochester Tennis League starts On April 25th. You can go to the link below to view your schedule. Please let me know if you see any errors (your name missing , you are scheduled to play someone twice, etc).

Week #1 matches are due on May 2nd. The weather forecast for next 10 days doesn't look great so scheduling matches will be challenging. If you are available you can try to set up your matches this weekend as well. Since the schedule is posted today we have 11 days to get the first match in.
Format
Session I is 10 weeks long.
As most of you know, we all start in the same division. Players are split in groups to begin with. Each group should have a wide range of levels (beginner to advanced). So one week you might play someone at your level, next week someone above or below.
During the first 7 weeks of the session you will get to play everyone in your group once. After the group phase is over, we play 3 weeks of placement/playoff rounds. You will get to play against players who won the same place in their respective groups.
So if you win your group, you will compete against 7 other group winners for places 1-8. Second places will play for places 9-16th and so on.
At the end of session I all players will be ranked from 1st to 56th place. These rankings will be used to determine what division (level) you get to play in session II (top 8 will play division I, 9-16th will play division II and so on).
Session II is 7 weeks long and you play everyone in your division once. Final session II standings will be used to set up brackets for session III (single match elimination tournament).

I was hoping to get 56 players, and as of now we are one short . We ended up with 55, so one group will be a player short. If I get someone last minute I will fill this spot. The women's league will have around 15 players, and I plan to start their division on May 2nd. As I said before , 8 women will play in men's league this session.
Subs
I have couple of subs this year. They will be available to cover if someone is gone for a week. Subs are only provided to benefit player who is available so they don't miss a match. Points won by subs won't count, and the match will still be recoded 0-6,0-6 forfeit .
Postponing matches
According to the league rules your previous week's matches need to be reported by Monday night. So basically we have 8 days to get one match done. In addition to this, players are allowed to take one day extension and play their match on Tuesday if they were unable to finish their match in 8 days. Players can take 2 extensions per a session. Aside from taking that one day extension, matches can't be postponed. All matches not completed by the deadline, will be recorded as DNP (did not play) and both players will lose 0.5 points as a penalty, unless one of them forfeits. Forfeits are recorded 6-0,6-0.
Reporting scores
As you know Dave P and Ashley will assist me this year with posting the scores on our web site. To begin with they will be responsible for updating scores and standings for the groups they play in. So those of you playing group A please report your scores to Dave at davepewowaruk@gmail.com Those of you in group C send your scores to Ashlet Bryant at bryant.ashley@mayo.edu. The rest of you will be e mailing the scores to me at maksimlecic@hotmail.com

Score keeping
We will test this new rule in session I, and if I get complaints about it we will take this optional tie break away.
RAC event
The Rochester Athletic Club hosted our season opening get-together this past Saturday. We had 18 players attending , and it was fun to get together as a group, hang out and play some tennis. it was also a nice opportunity to meet new players who are joining us this year. I hope we can get together as a group a couple of times over the summer as well.
Matches are played to win in three sets with an option for players to agree to stop playing at 1-1 and call it a tie. So possible scores will be:
2-0 (winner gets 3 points, loser gets 0 points)
2-1 (winner gets 3 points, loser gets 0.5 points )
1-1 (each player gets 1 point) both players must agree to stop playing at 1-1
DNP (match not completed on time, both players get 0.5 points deducted from their total
FORFEIT (Player that forfeits gets 0 points his opponent 3 points match recorder 6-0,6-0)
If set score is 6-6 players play a tie break (first to win 7 points with two points differential).
If the third set score is 6-6 players play a tie break unless they both decide to play to win by two games (for example 8-6,9-7 etc).
New 10 point tie break rule
As some of you suggested last year, in special situations we will allow an optional 10 point tie break instead of a full 3rd set. Here is the new rule:"The league encourages players to play a full third set, but in special situations a 10 point tiebreaker (instead of a full 3rd set) is allowed if both players agree to it. This exception is only to be used in special situations for example when a match goes too long and players don't think they can finish before it gets dark. If at least one player wants to play a full set, a full 3rd set is to be played. "
I was a little hesitant about this change , because I didn't want to have a situation where players who want to play a regular set feel pressured by their opponent to cut it short and play a tie break. So I stress one more time that the tie break is only to be played if both players agree to it. The norm is a full 3rd set and if you want to play it , don't change your mind because your opponent wants to play a tie breaker instead. We will test this new rule in session I, and if I get complaints about it we will take this optional tie break away.
Your contact info
Please go to our web site and check your contact information. If you want to add or change something let me know. I recommend using an e mail address that you check often and that you can check at home. Otherwise submitting your phone number would be helpful. Quick e mail communication is crucial to set up matches on time. I strongly recommend getting in touch with your opponent early in the week to have more flexibility scheduling your matches. If you have trouble reaching someone let me know.
As noted before your contact info is password protected now, and to view the players page you need to create a username and password.
To log in or to create your username/password please click on the log in button in the upper right corner of our main web site www.rochestertennisleague.com. The players page is not visible in the menu if you are not logged in.
