We are getting closer to the end of this session. The sign up deadline for the next session is Friday August 13th. Please let me know if you are in or out. Session III starts August 23rd, and it will be a single match elimination tournament, only winners advance to play next round.
End of the season party
Thanks to Kate Fish who initiated this at the RAC , I was able to get in touch with Rochester Athletic Club leaders who wanted to throw an end of the season party for our league. They will host the party at their club, and their tennis facilities will be available to us. We plan to schedule this on October 3rd (Sunday) . I thought this would be a great way for us to end the season, and also a nice opportunity for RAC to showcase their tennis facilities.
The event will include our session III championship match, and a doubles tourney. I hope two people playing in the finale will be avaialble that sunday. The RAC leaders also offered some doubles drills/classes if there is any interest for that. Appetizers and refreshments will be provided. All this will be free for members of our league.
So mark your calendars , it should be a fun event and a great opportunity for us to get together one last time for the 2010 season. I will keep you posted about this event , and will let you know exact time , it will most likely be in the afternoon. For those of you who are Vikings fans , don't worry they are off that Sunday.
Awards
Each session II divisional winner will be awarded a Sports Authority gift card in amount of 25 dollars and also 25 dollars worth of coupons from the same store. Wild card winner will be awarded 25 dollars worth of coupons. Also Bob Hubert will be awarded a gift card as a small thank you gift for his great efforts in promoting and supporting this league over the last few years. He is an endless source of new tennis players, and always willing to bend backwards to sub for other players.
Cannon Falls tournament
The doubles tournament last sunday in Cannon Falls was canceled because two leagues pulled out. So first 4 league doubles tournament didn't happen this year, but we hope to try it again next season. FAT league was able to set up 3 inter league matches this year, they played us , Northfiled USTA association, and Hastings league. This indicates that there is enough interest in the area for these events and we will try to organize the interleague meets in the future.
Tiebreaker rule
As you know couple of weeks ago we debated if we should add an option for players to play 10 point tiebreaker instead of a full third set if both players agree to it.
I decided to give it a try in session III. As days get shorter in Septemeber it could come handy in rare occasions when matches can't be done before it gets dark. We will revisit this issue for the next year, and session III will just be a good test to see how it goes.
So the third set rule will go as follows:
Matches are played to win in three sets.
The expectation is to play a full third set if set score is 1-1, however players have an option to play a 10 point tiebreaker instead of a full third set if they both agree to it at the start of the match.
The default is to play full third set. This means that if only one player wants to play a full 3rd set , a full set is supposed to be played.
Please feel free to chose full set if you preffer that. Tennis is a game of mental and physical endurance and if you feel like full set would benefit you don't settle for a 10 point tiebreaker just because your opponent is asking for it.
I want to stress again that full third set is an expectation and it only can be replaced by a 10 point tiebreaker if both players agree to it.
Coin flip rule
I used a coin flip during the playoffs phase of session I to determine winners of matches that were not done on time. We will have to have a set rule for this during the session III as well. By every Monday I will need to set up new matchups so previous round matches not done would have to be decided either by coin flip or we can have a higher seed advance. Let me know what you think about this. Since i tried coin flip last time I am leaning more toward advancing a higher seed to the next round. I hope that nobody would abuse this by avoiding to set up the match because they know they would advance even if they don't play.
So long for now. I will be out of town Sunday-Thursday next week so my e mail communication might not be as prompt as usual.
Have a nice week
