Newletter #13

-

Hello everybody

We had another great week with 14 matches completed and two forfeits. The league has been working out great this year, I am getting good feedback from the players and I hope everyone is having great time playing tennis this summer. If you have suggestions or ideas how to make the league even better send them my way. You can check the latest scores and standings at http://www.rochestertennisleague.webs.com/

During the past week we lost another player. David Shaffner in Division II pulled out, and he was replaced by Matt Coy. We might be losing Emmanuel in D4 as well (due to his relocation out of town). As of now I don't have anyone on the waiting list. In the past few weeks we lost 3 players, and I was lucky enough to be able to patch these openings quickly. If Emmanuel leaves I will need to get someone to cover remaining 3 matches in D4.

Rule reminder
This week I wanted to remind everyone how our scoring system works. This might be useful to new players who joined us this year. As I noted before, all the rules are written on our web site under rules tab.

Score keeping

Matches are played to win in three sets with an option for players to agree to stop playing at 1-1 and call it a tie.

So possible scores will be:
2-0 (winner gets 3 points, loser gets 0 points)
2-1 (winner gets 3 points, loser gets 0.5 points )
1-1 (each player gets 1 point) both players must agree to stop playing at 1-1
DNP (match not completed on time, both players get -0.5 points // players get half of a point deducted from their total points)
FORFEIT (Player that forfeits gets 0 points his opponent 3 points match recorder 6-0,6-0)

*If set score is 6-6 players play tie break (first to win 7 points with two points differential), except in third decisive set where they play to win by 2 games (for example 8-6,9-7 etc). Players can agree to play a third set tie break if they both prefer that option . If they both don't opt for tie break they get to play to win by two games.

I just wanted to emphasize that both players have to agree to call it a tie. Otherwise if we have one player wanting to go to play the third set, his opponent has to keep playing or retire and forfeit that third set.

Doubles tournament
I plan to set the annual doubles tournament/get-together toward the end of the season in late September. By then the Session III will be winding down and most players will be already out of the competition and done for the year. So this should make it easier to schedule the tournament. I am coming back from my vacation on Sept 19th so hopefully we can set this event on 26th of September or the weekend after. It would be a nice way to end the 2009. season .

So long for now, have a great week.
