Season 2014

Hello everyone

Ninth season of The Rochester Tennis League is coming up this spring. As of now,  all RTL competitions should start   on May 5th.  Once again we  will be offering  three different leagues.

1.Main singles league / co-ed
This league had 64 players split in 8 divisions last year and it was open to men and women. Last year's scores will be used to form divisions for 2014 season. New players will be placed according to their pre-season matches , self rating or their USTA rating.
2.Women's singles league
This league normally has two divisions and just like before previous scores will be used to form this years divisions.
3.Doubles league
Doubles league will be open to all variations (men's doubles, mixed doubles, women's doubles) . We will split the league by level but not by type of doubles combinations teams come up with. Last year we had 7-8 teams in D1 and 4-6 teams in D2 throughout the season.
Teams are required to register  3 players and they are  free to create lineups as they wish . Some teams might decide to divide playing time and rotate players each week, while others might utilize two players every week and have 3rd one playing  only if one of the two main players can't make it.
We hope to have another good turnout for this competition. Players are allowed to participate  in  multiple RTL competitions simultaneously if they think they can keep up with the schedule. We  encourage you to sign up for doubles even if you don't have a partner. You will be matched up with other players close to your level who are looking to get on a doubles team.

Doubles competition has a bit different set up then singles league. While singles league allows a great deal of flexibility  scheduling matches,  the doubles scheduling  is a little bit firmer. Doubles league has designated days and teams  are expected to be available on those days. Division I will play Monday evenings and all teams that sign up for D1 will need to make sure they are available each Monday. Matches can be moved to a different day if you get rained out or if two teams mutually agree to play on a different night. . Division II will play Wednesday nights. We suggest that teams stick to designated nights as much as possible. Many of you will play singles as well and rescheduling doubles later in the week can become very challenging.

Registration for session I of the 2014. season will start in about a week or so. You will be getting an email from me about it and all returning players will need to respond to that email to sign up.

Registration fees
As in the past, all returning players  will continue to play free of charge. New players joining us for the first time will be required to sign up on our web site and pay the sign up fee. In the past the fee was $10 per each session during the initial year (3 sessions x $10=$30). This year all new members will be paying one lump sum payment in amount of $30 rather  then 3 separate payments. After this one time initial fee,  the league will be free of charge.  Depending on how many new players we get , we hope  to pass some awards and trophies again this year. Anyone willing to make a voluntary donation to the league can do so by using pay pal donate buttons on the right side of this blog or on our home page.

RTL has been steadily growing each year since our original 2006 season and hopefully the trend will continue through 2014 season. . If you know someone that might be interested in joining  us please point them to our web site or have them email me. It's always great to see new faces and get some fresh blood to the league. The league is open to all  skill levels.

Most of our new players are referred  to us by our  current members . I thank you for spreading the word about this competition and your help in making it better and bigger.

Suggestions/Ideas
This  is good time to bring up ideas or suggestions about improving the league or  finding different ways to advertise it to new players. Please forward your ideas and suggestions  to my email .

Assistant organizers
Improvements made in updating scores on our web site allowed us to include more players in organizing the league last season. It worked really well and I will be looking for volunteers again this year.   Generally each assistant organizer is  in charge of updating scores and standings for two divisions. Email me if you might be interested in helping us out, and I will provide more details.

Registration  coming up soon
Since the sign up is starting soon,  it's a good time to think about your plans and which leagues you intend to play during session I. It's also a great time to start assembling rosters for your doubles teams. To be eligible , teams need three players. If you end up with 2 please let us know, we might have someone  waiting to get on a team. . Please mail me if you have any questions about the sign up or next season .

With  genuine hopes that this winter will eventually end , I am looking forward to another fun outdoor season. I am sure many of can't wait to dust off those rackets , and hit the courts.

So long for now, have a great week and you will be hearing from me soon.
