Season summary

Hello everyone

Another season of the Rochester Tennis League is over and I hope everyone had fun playing tennis this summer. Here is a little summary of the last session and the 2012   season.

 Session III summary

First of all I wanted to thank Art, Dave P and Steve for doing a great job organizing the league and entering scores while I was gone. It's great to have people willing to dedicate their time to help out the league.

Session III was concluded on Sunday Sept 16th. Congratulations to the 2012 champions

Tuan Truong men's/co-ed
Cherisse Kellen women's league
Chris Bachman won lower men's bracket.

The match completion rate was around 84% which is better than last year's session III.

The season was closed with doubles get-together at the RAC last  Sunday. We had around 20 people participating and it was a nice chance to meet other players and play some doubles. Men's championship match was played at the RAC on Thursday. It was a very competitive and enjoyable match to watch. Tuan Truong managed to defeat Felix Diehn 6-3,7-5 and defend his 2011 title. . These two played some great tennis and I  hope to see both of them back next year. You can view session 3 results and final standings on the link below

Season summary
I think it's safe to say that this 7th season of the Rochester Tennis League was the best one yet.
Our match completion rate was around 87% for the season. The league expanded once again. A new attendance record was set during the first session. We had 64 players in men's/co-ed, 16 in women's and 32 in the doubles league. Every year we try to make the league better by tweaking rules, and format a bit and adding new opportunities to play tennis. This year we started off playing in divisions/levels from the start and that brought up a lot more competitive matches during that first session. I think it worked really good and we will use the same system for the next season.
We added doubles league for the first time this spring. It had 15 teams divided in two levels and it worked out pretty good. We plan to set it up again next spring. Hopfully we will have enough interest for it.

Inter league
Just like last year we organized two   inter-league matches against Farmington league  . We hosted one meet in Rochester in June and Farmington hosted the second one this weekend.
The last one turned out to be very successful and competitive  with a lot of close matches. Six out of 13 matches were decided in a 10 point tiebreak.  A new format was tested, we all played one  singles and one doubles match. Sets were abbreviated to win  4 as opposed to 6 games. At 4-4 a tiebreak was played and third set was reduced to a 10 point tiebreaker. I thought  this format worked out well and I hope we can use it again. Our team ended up winning the meet 9-4. Thanks to our  captain Keegan Hakala for doing a great job organizing our team  and  setting up this event with  the FAT league organizer Josiah Hakala.  Here are the results:

Suggestions
As always new ideas and suggestions about improving the league are welcome. Feel free to either email your comments to me or use the comments box below this post. We will discuss possible changes and ideas next spring.

Entering scores
We made some big improvements regarding entering scores on our web site this year. Dave P and  Steve S created   a spreadsheet that helped us update standings  . I managed to embed these spreadsheets  in the web site using Google docs. This allows us to have multiple users entering scores and updating standings which was very helpful considering the size of the league. It also made the whole process a lot easier and faster. Thanks again to Steve, Art, and Dave for their help managing the singles league , Chris Jones for running the doubles league this spring, and Keegan for organizing inter-league meets.

Thank you all for participating and  I hope to see you  back next year.
