Newsletter #2
Despite some very challenging weather conditions past week we managed to complete 42 out of 47 matches. We had one forfeit in the doubles division , three in the men's league, and one in the women's. I am sure it was very difficult to arrange matches around so many rainy days , so great job everyone trying your best to play before the deadline.
New format
New session I format is working well so far, we have a lot of very competitive matches across the league. Just wanted to remind everyone that some players will move up or down a level at the end of session I. Players that win top two places will move up one level and bottom two will drop a level down. In case two players end up with the same number of points their head to head match will determine who is ahead. If they had a tie or DNP , total game differential from all 7 matches will be a tiebreaker. If three players end up with same number of points , points won in their 3 head to head matches will determine who is ahead, if it's still a tie then game differential from all 7 matches will determine who is ahead.
As always in between session we will probably lose some players, so we might need to bump up someone even if they didn't win top two places. For example a player wins 6th place in D2 and then decides to drop out for session II. Seventh and eight place are dropping a level down to D3. Their places are taken by two players who were 1st and 2nd in the division III. Question that comes up is how we fill that one spot left? Should we give it to the 3rd player in the division below, or should that 7th place player stay in D2? Neither player really earned a D2 spot , but they both can make an argument that it should be them taking that spot. If both players would prefer to play up, maybe we should have them play a match for that spot providing there is time between two sessions. Let me know if anyone has any thoughts about it.
Subs
As some of you that play doubles league know, we have been setting little bit firmer rules regarding subs. For the singles league this issue can be even more pronounced. Basically, when one player is not available at all he/she usually forfeits the match.and their opponent gets points. Sometimes we are able to get a sub to cover so that other player still plays a match that week. One thing that we need to figure out is what happens with points that subs win. Should we count them or not? Standings can get skewed if a sub turns out to be much higher level than the players they are replacing. This can be done intentionally by a player who looks for a higher level sub, or unintentionally I can pick a sub from one of the new players on the waiting list. If I remember correctly one match played by a sub couple of years ago determined the divisional champion. This year with our new format, points won by a sub can determine who needs to drop a level down or move a level up. To make more sense out of the standings I think points won by subs should not count. Subs should be allowed to come in but their purpose would be to ensure that a match takes place that week, and not to earn points for the player they are subbing for. On the other hand an argument can be made that if someone is injured for couple of weeks and finds a sub that plays in a level below what would be wrong with counting those points? It would be kind of tough to control the level that subs are at especially people on my subs list , they are new players that we don't know much about. Let me know what you think. You can vote in the survey on the right side of this blog, leave a comment below the post or e mail me.
For now I will leave it to the available player to decide before the match if points won by the sub should count.
Inter-league meet
Our inter-league match versus FAT league is scheduled for Saturday June 9th at 6:15pm at Mayo HS in Rochester. If you would like to participate or if you have questions please e mail our RTL team captain Keegan Hakala at nageek4@gmail.com. This will be our fourth inter-league meet, previous 3 were held in Cannon Falls . I encourage everyone to participate, it's a fun event and a good opportunity to meet other players from the area. Match ups are usually very close and team captains do a great job organizing these events. Farmington Area Tennis League is a very well organized recreational league that started about 4 years ago. In many ways it mirrors our league, but they do have somewhat different set up due to the fact that their matches are scheduled on two specific days every week.
So long for now, have a great week and enjoy this beautiful tennis weather.
