As you might noticed we had some changes on the schedule. Jim P is out for the rest of the session due to an injury, Tony is also going to miss some matches for the same reason. Dustin is covering Jim's spot aside from playing in D3, Bob Hubert is covering for Nenad in D2 for couple of more weeks, and I still don't have any replacement for Tony L in the wild card group. Hopefully we can get someone to sub until Tony is ready to play again.
Interleague meet
As Keegan already informed you, there is an inter league doubles tournament planned for Sunday August 8th at 4:30. We are invited to join FAT league, Hastings Tennis League and Northfield USTA association .It would be another great opportunity to represent our league and meet other players from the area. Our last meet was very fun and I strongly encourage you to participate if you are free. I am really glad that this kind of team competition is taking off and I hope it becomes regularly scheduled each summer. This was all initiated by the FAT League organizer Josiah Hakala last last year and our first meet finally happened on June 26th this year.
Keegan Hakala is organizing RTL team for these events so any questions or ideas can be directed his way.
I also tried to get in touch with Twin Cities Tennis league to see if they would be interested in a meet with our league, but even though they have close to 200 players their organizer didn't seem to think there would be enough interest for a traveling match.
Third set rule
An idea of playing a 10 point tiebreaker instead of full third set has come up. This tie breaker would be agreed on before the match starts, and it would be used when players don't think they can finish a full set due to low visibility late in the evening or other reasons.
As you know for the past 5 years our rule has been to play a full third set ,( first person to win 6 games and tie breaker at 6-6 with an option to win by two games example 8-6,10-8 etc.). Over the last 5 years I had maybe handful of matches reported with 10 point tie breaker. I accepted these even though they were not in line with our rules.
A lot of our matches go to three sets, for example so far this session 13 matches went long, and all of them were completed . Players just have to schedule matches early enough to allow themselves enough time in case they go to third set. It seems like there is rarely need to play a 10 point tie breaker .
Personally I would always go for a full third set. Cutting it short and playing a tie breaker seems like an easy way out of a long match, and considering I can never get enough tennis, a tie breaker kind of spoils the fun for me. But this is only my opinion , I wanted to see what you think. Maybe letting two opponents determine what works best for them is a right way to do it.
So question for you is:
Would you be in favor of letting players have an option to play a 10 point tie breaker instead of a full third set? Both players would have to agree to play third set tiebreaker. If they both don't agree, the default position should be to play a full set.
Send me your comments in email or post them in the comment box below this blog, or use message board (link on the top right part of this page).
Any rule change has to be preferred by majority of the players, and it should be aimed toward making the league more appealing to its members.
Have a great week.
