Newsletter #2

We are done with week #2. Despite a pretty bad weather past week, we completed 18 out of 20 matches scheduled which puts us at 90 % completion rate. Two matches ended up forfeits. Thank you all for doing a great job keeping up with the schedule. Spring weather is always unpredictable. I have been tentative to start the league this early but with the latest expansion we had to extend the season . Scores and standings are updated on our web site

Deadlines
Just a little reminder regarding the deadlines. Matches are due by each Monday night. This means that you can still play that Monday . So if for example, you are out of town for an entire week, you can still play your match on Monday following your week away. As your last option you can also request an extension, and play your match on Tuesday. After that , the match is either DNP or forfeit. Players can use 2 extensions per a session. Mondays are sort of overlap days, they belong to current week and also week before. So you really have 8 days to play a match, and two times per a session you can use one day extension making it 9 days to play one match. As you can see the scheduling system is more than flexible, it is created so we can complete as many matches as possible. We had to draw the line somewhere to keep us on the schedule, so matches not done by the deadlines can not be postponed. This rule will be enforced without exceptions.

DNP vs. Forfeit

When a match doesn't get done we have two options to record it. One is DNP (didn't play) and this option penalizes both players because they lose .5 points . This happens when players are unable to arrange time that works best for both of them.

Forfeit happens when one of the players is not available at all or has very limited availability, and they decide to forfeit the match so his opponent doesn't get penalized for not playing. I try not to be involved in determining which player should forfeit. I hope players will in the spirit of fair play forfeit their matches on their own when they don't think they were available enough. So in most cases I will record a match DNP unless one of the players forfeits on their own. I will only force a forfeit if someone abuses this , for example if they refuse to forfeit and it's obvious that they didn't show any effort in arranging the match.

RTL Team and Inter-league meet

I got in touch with the FAT league manager to reassess a possibility of having an inter league meet. The FAT league(Farmington Area Tennis League) started last year somewhat modeled after ours , and they had a great turn out. They expect to have another strong season and they are up for an inter-league match. So I need to find out how many of you are interested to represent our league.
This event would take place on Saturday June 12th at 10:30am in Cannon falls. We would have various singles and doubles matches set up . Please drop me an e mail if you are interested by Thursday. I need players who can commit to this event and be available. We will create a team of the best ranked players who show interest in this team competition.
This would be a great opportunity to participate in a team competition, represent our league and meet some new players from the area.

Challenger and Women's division
Our two other divisions started last week. The Challenger league ended up with 7 players , they had a great start without any matches missed. The Women's division has 11 players and they started session I past week as well. The womens's web site has moved to www.womenstennisleague.moonfruit.com

So long for now, have a great week.
